Sébastien Josse

A native of Nice but now an adoptive Breton, Sébastien Josse is Gitana’s ambassador and the skipper of the Edmond de Rothschild craft. A man who likes a challenge and is as talented as he is hard-working, he has very quickly moved up through the ranks to become one of the most outstanding sailors of his generation.

Birthdate 31/03/1975 Port of registry Nice

When he discovered sailing on the shores of the Mediterranean during his childhood, Sébastien Josse could never have imagined that the sea would take up such a large part of his life and even less so the direction his life would take. An endearing character, who is discreet on shore, he has shown himself to be a formidable sailor, for whom everything has seemingly fallen into place at an incredible rate. Thanks to diligent work and some choice encounters which provided him with some ambitious projects, Sébastien Josse has carved himself out a path that has led him to the top of his game.

Preamble to a great sailor

The Mediterranean was his playing field during his childhood… Indeed, it is on these waters that the youngest member of the Josse family discovered the delights of boating during family cruises. Together with his brother and his group of mates, they signed up for the local club where they raced 420s. To follow their coach, they joined the Yacht Club de Monaco. From there, the young sailor got a leg up into the J24, the one-design racer-cruiser par excellence at that time. For Sébastien, sailing wasn’t yet synonymous with competition; rather it was more about leisure and opportunities to go on voyages.
In 1993, the year he turned 18, the sailor from southern France completed his first Atlantic crossing during the Transat des Alizés, a race from France to the West Indies for enthusiasts, which Sébastien was to share with his father aboard a Sun Rise 34. At the end of this first offshore race, he granted himself a year’s sabbatical amongst Granada and the Virgin Islands aboard the yacht left in his hands by his father. On his return to metropolis, he was convinced that his future would be written at sea. Read more »
