In 1963, having caught the offshore racing bug, Baron Edmond de Rothschild commissioned a fabulous racer-cruiser from the Italian yard, San Germani: a 27.57-metre yawl. More comfortable and faster than her predecessor, Gitana IV was built entirely from mahogany and posted distinguished performances on several occasions. In addition to some runners-up spots in various races on the Mediterranean circuit, including the Giraglia, it is important to note her international reputation in the English RORC races and notably her Fastnet record, which she held for 19 years.
